Friends, this is Amber typing to you over the inter webs!
I just returned from a grand vacation up to Colorado where I completed one of my bucket list items! To climb a 14,000ft mountain!!! Friends and I loaded up the truck with our bikes and hiking boots and off to the mountains we drove! We spent our first day in the mountains exploring, enjoying tasty local treats and trying our legs and lungs out on the trails! We hiked a short bit through the snow over to a great little lake! In between finding delicious local food we killed time exploring shops and riding bikes around town.
Saturday was the big day! We started our assent on Gray’s peak around 7:30am. Talk about a beautiful experience! Once I hit about 13,000 feet I got pretty altitude sick. There’s a lot of my vomit on that mountain! 🙂 At 13,500 I was sure I was calling it quits, couldn’t make it to the top…then I called a couple of friends and they talked some smarts into me and up the mountain I went! There’s nothing like reaching the top of the mountain, feeling like you’re at the top of the world and taking gobs of pictures with strangers who had just become your best friends encouraging you along the journey. It took me forever to get to the top stopping to empty my stomach and then stopping to fill it back up not wanting to get dehydrated, my decent however was FAST, I was on a quick run to get off that mountain. I think I finished in just about 6 hours!
If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I’d climb a mountain I would have shook my head and said, there’s no way I’ll ever be able to do that. Back in those days just walking around the block made my joints hurt so bad that most days it wasn’t worth it. If you would have asked me 5 years ago if I’d climb a mountain I probably would have laughed in your face. After years of being in a cast or a walking boot for a foot that they couldn’t figure out how to fix I was sure that any sort of physical activity was not going to be a part of my future….If you were to ask me today if I’d climb a mountain the answer will be, Yes, when does the van leave? I feel absolutely blessed to be able to move without pain! It’s a gift and a blessing I try to take advantage of on a daily basis!!! Yes, it was hard to climb a mountain but how amazing and blessed I feel. How did I, this Kansas Country Bumpkin get lucky enough to have wonderful friends who will adventure with me!?!?!
My bucket list of items continues to grow, I hope to see you during an adventure soon!
